It turns out pollution was a bigger threat to Brazil’s critical infrastructure than cyber security concerns:
A massive 2007 electrical blackout in Brazil has been newly blamed on computer hackers, but was actually the result of a utility company’s negligent maintenance of high voltage insulators on two transmission lines. … Brazil’s independent systems operator group later confirmed that the failure of a 345-kilovolt line “was provoked by pollution in the chain of insulators due to deposits of soot”

Instructables shows you how to wire your house with Cat5 or 6 Ethernet cable. I pulled cable through my house last year, and it has made a huge difference in network performance, particularly for my Mac Mini media center.
Pulling cable in an existing structure will be fraught with frustration, and isn’t a one-person job, but the results will be worth it if you do media or file sharing.
